Why Ice On Your Air Conditioner is a Problem

Have you ever noticed ice forming on your air conditioner? If so, you have a problem. Ice may seem like a good thing, considering that your air conditioner is supposed to be cooling your home. However, it’s actually a sign that the system is in trouble. Read on to find out more about why ice forms on your air conditioner, and the kind of damage it can cause.

Why it Happens

Your air conditioner cools your home by evaporating refrigerant in an evaporator coil. The air temperature around the coil drops as heat is siphoned from it. Condensation forms on the coil as the air is cooled past the dew point. If the flow of warm air from the ducts is ever interrupted during operation, the condensate on the coil will freeze and form ice. Eventually, the ice will grow enough to cover the entire coil.

Problems Associated With Air Conditioner Ice

There are a myriad of different issues that air conditioner ice can cause. First, while the evaporator coil is frozen it will be unable to siphon heat from the air in your ducts. As a result, the air conditioner will be unable to cool your home. Second, the weight of the ice will eventually warp the coil, requiring that it be replaced. Finally, the ice can spread down the refrigerant line to other parts of the system, causing them to malfunction and eventually resulting in a full breakdown. If you notice ice forming on your air conditioner, you should call for repairs as soon as possible. Otherwise, you may find yourself spending quite a bit of money on repairs.
