Signs You Need Air Conditioning Repair Services

air-conditioner-maintenanceAs the temperature continues to rise over the next few weeks, you’re probably going to start using your air conditioner more often to keep comfortable. That’s all well and good, but you should know that putting more strain on your air conditioner is going to make it more likely for the system to develop problems. Even if you are careful about scheduling preventive maintenance every spring, there is still a chance that the system will develop some kind of issue during the high-demand summer months. Keep an eye out for the following signs that you need air conditioning repair services.

Leaking Fluid

If there is fluid leaking from your air conditioner, it could be one of two things: condensate or refrigerant. Condensate leaks are annoying, and can cause parts of the system to rust, so they should definitely be dealt with in a prompt and effective manner. Refrigerant leaks are much more serious, though.

The lower the refrigerant level in the air conditioner drops, the lower the system’s output capacity will drop. If the refrigerant level is allowed to drop low enough, the system will break down entirely. Make sure that you call for repairs if you notice fluid dripping from your air conditioner, if there is ice on the refrigerant lines, if your system is short cycling, or if you hear a hissing sound coming from it.

Lower Air Circulation

If your air conditioner is not blowing as much air as it should be, there could be a couple of different things wrong with it. It’s possible that your air filter is clogged. Most homeowners realize that their air conditioner has an air filter, but are not always diligent in changing it every few months. If the filter isn’t changed often enough, it will become clogged and block most of the air in the ducts from flowing into the air conditioner.

It’s also possible that your air handler is malfunctioning. The air handler is the part of the system responsible for circulating air throughout the home during operation. If the air handler malfunctions, the system won’t be able to blow air throughout the home. If you notice a grinding sound coming from your air conditioner, that likely means that your air handler is in trouble. Make sure you call for repairs before your air handler motor overheats and burns out.

Short Cycling

If your air conditioner is turning on and off every couple of minutes instead of completing a full cooling cycle, that’s called short cycling. Short cycling cuts into the system’s cooling ability, but it also accelerates the wear and tear the system. The longer the system is allowed to short cycle, the more likely it will be to develop other problems. Prolonged short cycling can even shorten the overall lifespan of the air conditioner by a number of years. So, if you notice your air conditioner short cycling it’s a good idea to call for repairs as soon as possible.
