Signs You Need to Replace Your AC

Installing an air conditioner is a pretty big investment, so it’s natural to want to get the most out of it by making the system last for as many years as possible. However, even with careful maintenance and prompt repairs, all things must end. Summer’s not far off now, and you don’t want to be caught without a working air conditioning system when it gets here. If your current air conditioner won’t be able to cut it over the next few months, you should replace it now so you don’t have to deal with it breaking down later. There are a number of warning signs that your air conditioner is reaching the end of its life.

More Expensive to Operate

There are, of course, going to be some months that you use your air conditioner quite a lot and some when you don’t. The monthly cost of using your system should rise and fall accordingly. However, you should be concerned if your air conditioner is costing more to operate on a monthly basis with no apparent explanation. That could be happening because of wear and tear on the system, which is causing its efficiency to fall and forcing it to operate for longer to compensate. If that’s the case, there’s not much you can do but replace the system. If you suspect that your air conditioner is becoming more expensive to operate for this reason, have a professional examine it to make sure something else isn’t the source.

Frequent Repair Needs

All air conditioners, regardless of age, need repairs every once in a while. Accidents happen, random chance throws a proverbial wrench into the system, and so on. The difference between the odd repair issue and a sign that the system is dying, though, is how frequently the repair needs occur. If you need to repair the system every few years, you probably don’t have anything to worry about. If you need to repair the system every few months, that’s a big problem. Chances are, if that’s happening it’s because the wear and tear on the air conditioner is so great that it’s causing parts to wear down and fail in groups. It’s definitely more cost effective to replace the system than to repair it at that point.

Old Age

Air conditioning systems tend to last between 10-15 years. Once an air conditioner gets older than that, it gradually begins to develop more and more issues related to its age. You can keep an air conditioner operating for longer than 15 years, with some luck and enough money spent on repairs. However, the system will undoubtedly be less cost-effective than installing a new one. If your air conditioner is older than 15 years, contact a professional and have them examine your system for you.
