3 Signs It’s Time for a New Air Conditioner

air-conditionerSummer is here, which means now it’s more important than ever to ensure that your air conditioner is up to the task of keeping you cool. If your system can’t get you through another hot summer, it’s important that you replace it now. Otherwise, you run the risk of having the system break down in the middle of one of the hottest days of the year. Have a look at three of the most common indicators that your air conditioner needs to be replaced.

Steadily Increasing Monthly Bills

If your monthly operating costs for your air conditioner are steadily increasing from month to month, without any corresponding increase in usage, you should be concerned. Unexplained increases in operating costs are often the result of a problem with the air conditioner. It might be something that can be repaired, but then again it might simply be that your air conditioner is worn out.

Wear and tear builds up on the various parts of the air conditioner over time, eventually causing a drop in efficiency for the system. The efficiency loss will force the air conditioner to operate for longer periods of time in order to compensate, which will contribute to higher monthly operating costs.

More Costly Repair Issues

Repair issues are not an unusual thing to have to deal with every once in a while. However, you should start to take notice if you need to repair your heat pump multiple times a year. That kind of frequent repair need is often due to extreme levels of wear and tear on the system. An air conditioner near the end of its life will have more parts fail in rapid succession due to this wear and tear. There’s nothing that can be done about this, aside from just repairing things until they break or replacing the system entirely.  If you need to repair your system that often, you will be much better off replacing the entire system. As it stands, you’re just replacing the system one part at a time, anyway.

Older Than 15 Years

Air conditioners tend to have an average lifespan between 10 and 15 years. Once the system gets older than that, it will quickly begin to develop issues (like those listed above) that cut into its efficiency. You can keep your air conditioner running past 15 years, if you want to spend the time and money to do so. It would be far more cost effective in the long run, though, to just replace the entire system. If your air conditioner is older than 15 years, it’s a pretty good sign that you need to replace it. Consult with a professional about whether or not it’s a good idea to replace your air conditioner with a new one. They’ll be able to recommend the best air conditioning solution for your home’s needs.
